New Option for San Francisco to San Diego: Alaska Airlines

Yesterday, Alaska Airlines began operating four daily flights between San Francisco and San Diego. Fares will begin at $79 each way.

This will add additional competition to a route already dominated by Southwest Airlines, which operates from Oakland. Perhaps residents of San Francisco won't have to trek across the Bay Bridge to the beautiful Oakland airport in order to get a decent fare to San Diego.

By the way, I once saw a mouse running up the filthy baggage carousel at Oakland. Nothing but class over there at OAK....

Comments:
Rat baggage notwithstanding, Oakland International is actually the quicker port of entry for anyone seeking an expedited trip into downtown San Francisco via air travel. Add this to one other factoid -- that the Hayward fault is the greater risk to seismically frail structures in downtown Frisco than the San Andreas -- and the pervasive carpetbagger bagging on Oakland starts making more or less sense (depending on your bent). People move to Frisco, but tend to eventually "live" elsewhere. With this balance comes wisdom and a deeper appreciation that places like Oakland have dignity that transcends the "ugly-stepsister" treatment loaded upon it (particularly by recent arrivals to Baghdad by the Bay). I love San Francisco for its fluxing fruitcake savoir faire, but I live, breath and will die in Oakland.
